New update has messed up so many things

(I initially wrote this to upload it to App Store reviews, but I decided it would be better to engage with the Kalaam development team directly)

I enjoyed using it the app, but I felt that the grammar component was missing. In the new update, they added grammar but messed up so many other things. I prefer the old version a lot more despite the addition.

  • In “usage”, only one meaning of the word is shown, instead of the list of all conjugations and their occurances in the Quran like before (eg کتب will just show کتب and not کتاب etc)
  • In word details, the first section is the “Explanation”. This is usually a lengthy paragraph detailing the nuances of the meaning of the word. Although it is good to include it, it should be further down below grammar and usage sections, as it is a matter of deeper learning, and the other two sections are more relevant if you’re only doing it 5-10 mins a day. A very short description/definition will suffice to be on the top.
  • Also in word details, before you could click on different words in the verse and it would immediately show their usage sections. It doesn’t do that anymore unfortunately.
  • The app has become so glitchy. The number of new words changes randomly and many times the “Read” section doesn’t even click and you’re stuck on main menu (iOS)
  • In the “Read” section, the prioritised surahs appear on the top, instead of appearing in the order of the mushaf like before. This change just makes it confusing and very unorganised
  • When the app turns on, it says “Downloading database” and other code-y jargon below the kalaam logo which should only be seen in the developer version, not the customer one

Jazakullah khair for your efforts, and may Allah make it easy for you. I apologise for the long list, but I believe most of them can fixed by reverting to the old version until all of these problems are fully patched and tested

I couldn’t be more agree, I was excited about the grammar update, but when its updated it just not what I expected to be…I mean I learnt a lot without it, naturally I just assumed that with the grammar it would be phenomenal, but I guess I am wrong

Salam, have to also agree here.

Specifically, clicking on different words to immedaitely show meaning and usage was also Handy

Appreciate you speaking to us instead of just leaving a bad review. It’s a massive update, so a few nooks and crannies like this we missed.

I have fixed everything you mentioned except:

  • the explanation section can be collapsed. once it’s collapsed, it will remember to stay collapsed for future visits to that screen.
  • we’re working on making it more responsive right away. I understand why you have to click read a couple times when it loads. We know exactly why and a fix is coming soon iA.
  • The prioritized surahs at the top is a matter of taste. Makes it a lot easier to find them. If enough people hate this we will revert to the old way.
  • Yes the jargon on initial load was to catch any issues that could’ve arisen. It’s helped us catch a few. Will get rid of it once we feel we can.

Appreciate the duas. Ameen  Love dedicated users like you pointing out flaws so we can continue improving. Just be a bit patient please  We’ve worked 12-18 hour days for the last month to get to this point.

Update coming out later tonight iA

Yes I like the prioritised surahs at the top , helps with searching them. Earlier I had to keep scrolling to see which ones I choose and which I didn’t

I would actually like to have to modes for learning, one for words and another for grammar instead of it been together. It would help to go revise the rules again as I feel I will keep forgetting them

@areeb JazakAllah khair for taking the effort and making an app dedicated to learning Quranic vocab. May Allah reward you and your team immensely

Jazakullah khair for your efforts. May Allah SWT purify our intentions.

Honestly, I can see the changes made growing on me. The grammar part seems pretty helpful now that the initial fixes have been made. Only further suggestions I can have for refinement are:

  • Before, only the ayats from the prioritised surahs would come in the lessons. Since the update, none of the lessons have verses from the prioritised surahs. I am not sure if this is intentional, but I think most (not all) teaching should be based on prioritised surahs.

  • I understand that this is a tricky problem to solve, but in the future you can work on refining the word and ayat snippet translations to ensure that the meaning is exactly like what is should be, and there minimal misunderstandings.

For example, in the ayah section in word details, the verse snippet said “… کفر سلیمن”. It was only when you clicked on the a word towards the beginning that the first part of the verse came up, which said ما کفر, that suleimaan AS did NOT disbelieve. Also, like some other users mentioned, ensure that ت starting verses differentiate between she and you based on context.

This is not a very urgent issue compared to others (and also a much more time consuming one), but just something to be cognizant on for future development. Jzk
