Why does my lesson continue after I kill the app and open it again?

I just did my 4 minutes of learning, with two new words included along with review cards (my expected daily amount is 2 new words per day).

Then I killed the app and when I opened again, it was giving me another 16 cards which would probably be four new words. I set my time to 2 minutes per day and then it became 8 cards. So I clicked “continue lesson” and went over two new words.

Is this a bug or is it working as intended? If the latter, why do we get more learning after closing the app, even if we completed our lesson for the day?
