I have learned the most through the app Memrise. I hope there is a way you can maybe copy their methods or make it better specifically regarding practice.
Say for example I did what I’m supposed to do for the day. Instead of learning new words can we provide access to practice the words we already learned for refreshing our memories and using the algorithm or whatever method to choose what should be reviewed the next day?
ie more practice for the day’s lesson. Memorize I believe does this well.
We already have access to all the cards we learned under the profile and then tapping on show familiar words. As of now we can only search specific words we know and tap on these familiar cards to see more information. There isn’t a sort of review section only for the review cards yet, but it could be an addition in the future inshallah.
Please do because sowmtimes I would like to keep reviewing during the day of the day’s lesson to solidify. I have more time on my hands sometimes so I’d like to use it.
If you remove the time limit, where do we stop?
I did that for another app, quranic, where if you are premium you can remove the quiz time limit of one minute but i never got to finish it because it was like 800+ words and eventually i lost interest.
I feel like the current system works best and if someone wants to keep going, they can do multiple tests its not like you can only do the challenge once.
As of now, there aren’t “cards”, but there are still words to review.
I did suggest a few ideas like familiar card mastery which could replace or substitute more review lessons, and for the daily challenge being infinite, either we:
Add an option in profile called Accessibility where people who have trouble or a disability can still use Kalaam in their own way and learn what they need to. I’ve seen many people complain that the daily challenge is tricky due to a disability they have and by adding a switch to turn on this mode, which could provide a slower and simpler learning process for people who struggle could be better.
What if all of those words were in a card form, and the user could have the choice of swiping between them (just like the review lesson) so that the “show familiar words” could have a better purpose?
I think this was left out deliberately to take advantage of spaced repitition. It’s said that it’s much more effective to be tested on something when you are about to forget it rather than testing everything at the same time.
So the more mature words that you know quite well rarely show up i.e. just before you forget them.
And the new words you’ve just learned show up more frequently since you’re more prone to forgetting them.
Some people do not have the same memorization skills than others. For some people they can memorize with only one lesson and keep things on their mind for a long time. For other people they have to review something multiple times a day and don’t have a good long term memory so many people want other ways to review
Exactly which is why I wish could do the daily lesson multiple times a day instead of just once. It’s crazy. Stuck between a rock and hard place. It’s almost like either do “nothing” or do million words. There should be a function for multiple times a day review IMO. One time is fine for some but what about others? At the end of the day this is about repititon and practice. If we do not provide those basics it becomes difficult.
its not just brother adeeb’s way of reviewing. This has been scientifically proven to be the best method of retention and long term memory with lots of test subjects.
something else you could both try is,
screenshot words and review them everyday,
do more practice challenges (i see my newly learned words come in daily challenge), sometimes i even cancel the daily challenge when few seconds are left, to do daily challenge again. i think practice challenge is a bit more random.
That science covers the average person. Not every single person with all their different mindsets and thought processes and learning skills. Some people really need to do more and more to actually keep something in their head.
It’s a marathon, not a sprint, but if you don’t know the track of the marathon to begin with it won’t work out.
Every mechanism or process is made based on the average person which is first tested on a large number of people. You cant change a system to fit a few.
You have other options if the “average” phenomena isnt working for you. I’ve pointed it above.
But you also cant expect the system to change just to accommodate you. If you dont like the way this app works, there are plenty of other ones.
That’s not the main point here. The start of this whole thread was to request a way to review cards more often. Some people are just suggesting a feature or addition so that they can benefit and gain more knowledge. And people aren’t trying to change the system to fit a few in the first place; they simply want the developers feedback on their idea to see where it goes from there.
The few ideas you gave may work but aren’t as effective as the daily lesson. Doing the daily lesson basically gives you the answer with four incorrect options so it really doesn’t work your brain as hard. The familiar words aren’t in a strong format and that’s why I asked if it could be similar to the format the daily lesson is and have a switch mode between them. Screenshotting takes up a lot of space especially when you learn words and have to review words everyday. Simply, people are just requesting an addition or change which could make Kalaam more viable for everyone.
Loving this debate, guys! It’s really interesting to see all the different perspectives. I haven’t made a final call yet, but for now, the time limits will stay in place for everything. I’m only considering removing it for practice challenges. We’ve got a ton of new daily challenge types coming soon, insha’Allah — lots of fun and social options. You’ll be able to challenge each other and compete in all kinds of ways to see who can translate the Quran faster and more accurately. Those will still have time limits too!
