More control over learning new words

Assalaamu’Alaikum,

May Allah, (swt) guide everyone who striving for a better understanding of his noble Quran to this app as well as other means they may be undertaking. Guidance is from Allah and ALL good comes from him. :palms_up_together:t3:

I’ve recently come across, a more engaging way, (for me) of learning new words which the app partly supports but needs some adjustments Insha Allah.

It can be quite daunting, (and could be a reason for many not being consistent using the app daily) when trying to learn new words every day which you are unfamiliar with. It’s great to be able to priorities certain surahs and also mark words as familiar when reading surahs within the app.

When marking a word as familiar, (in reading section) the app does not register this as having completed a daily lesson. You can spend a considerable amount of time learning words you may be a little familiar with but the app will not consider this as daily usage. This makes this method of learning uninviting.

When you do mark a word as familiar, it would be great if the app asked you, if you would like to see the flash cards for this word? Otherwise it’s easy to miss the slight variations the word has when trying to do this manually.

When marking a word as familiar, I do read the flash card, associated grammar rules for how the word is derived and words which share the same route under the ‘usage’ section. From here, (usage section) I often find, I’m familiar with many of the other variations of the route in this list. However I can’t find a way of marking these words as familiar? I’ve tried selecting words, (from the drop-down) but the option is not presented.

Using the Fa Aa La example used in Grammer rules. Fa Aa La appears 88 times so most learners would have learnt this word quite early on. In the usage section, the same route appears another 5 times, (total of 108 times) each variation appearing from just 1 to 9 times.

The second Fa Aa La variation in the usage list, Faa IL) only appears 9 times but its grammar rule is a very basic one, (which again is taught quite early). Nevertheless, if you select this from the drop down, the app will tell you if you know this rule. So quite early on, you will know the word and the grammer rule, but the app will not teach you Faa iL until, (I’m guessing you are over 90% of understanding) because it only appears 9 times.

Learning grammer rules, (especially for non native Arabic speakers) is quite difficult and many may delay it. I’ve found learning a grammer rule when you are already familiar with a particular word is much easier .It gives the rule more context and if you are already familiar with a verse which contains an example of that particular word and grammer rule, it’s even easier. This is my process I’m trying to highlight which I think would be so beneficial.i.e, it would be amazing to be able to select words as familiar from the reading page, (then being presented the flash card) and marking similar routes, (as familiar) from usage page.

On the usage page list it would be great if variations you know are highlighted with a different colour.

I hope this doesn’t sound random, so I would ask anyone reading this, to read a verse or Surah, (from the reading section) they know and see how many words appear in that Surah or verse that are marked as unfamiliar but they actually do know. Even if you don’t know the meaning of certain words in the verses you’ve memorised or are reasonably familiar with, learning the meaning, (or grammar rules) of these words will be much easier for you to remember than words which are completely new to you Insha Allah.

Barakallahufeeq :green_heart:
