Possible Issue with Point Redistribution Algorithm for Leaderboard Challenge

Assalamualaikum

I believe there may be a flaw in the point redistribution algorithm used for the leaderboard challenge. As shown in the attached example, the redistributed points for the 1st place are actually lower than the original scored points, while the 2nd place received more than they originally scored.

I’ve noticed this discrepancy occurring on several occasions and thought it might be worth reviewing.

Assalamu alaikum AlDinoAlHajj,

Thank you for reaching out and for providing the screenshot. We appreciate you highlighting this observation.

For the leaderboard challenge rewards, the points you see redistributed are not directly your original individual score. Instead, the system tallies the total points for the challenge across all participants and then divides them among the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners based on their rank. This is why the redistributed points might differ from what you individually scored.

You can find more detailed information on how these points are calculated by tapping the info icon on the leaderboard challenge screen in the app.

Assalamualaikum,

Thank you, as always, for your prompt response and clear, detailed explanation. May Allah reward you and your team abundantly in this world and the hereafter.

What I intended to highlight is a potential weakness in the current point redistribution formula. From my observation, the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners receive ½, ⅓, and ⅙ of the total points respectively. However, as shown in the screenshot I shared earlier, this can result in the 1st place winner receiving fewer redistributed points than the actual points he/she scored - especially when there are only a small number of participants (e.g. 2 or 3) and the 1st place score is significantly higher than the others. Understandably, this may cause some frustration, as the top performer could end up “losing” points to lower-placed participants.

While there’s no absolute right or wrong in how the formula is currently set, I’d like to suggest a potentially fairer approach - one that redistributes points proportionally based on actual scores. For example:

Distributed points = (Actual points) × (Total points to be distributed) ÷ (Sum of actual points of top 3 placers)

This way, each participant’s reward reflects their actual performance relative to the others.

Alternatively, to further encourage participation, you may consider allowing all participants to retain the actual points they earned, while applying the proposed redistribution formula as a bonus for the top 3 placers. This way, everyone keeps what they’ve rightfully earned, and the top performers are further rewarded in proportion to their contributions. Such an approach could go a long way in recognizing effort and promoting continued engagement.

Just a humble suggestion for your kind consideration.

Assalamu alaikum AlDinoAlHajj,

JazakAllah khair for your very detailed follow-up and the thoughtful suggestions regarding the leaderboard point redistribution. We appreciate you taking the time to outline these alternative approaches aimed at enhancing fairness and motivation for participants. Your insights on proportional rewards and bonus points are valuable. We will certainly take these suggestions into consideration as we continue to refine the challenge features.

Assalaamu alaykum very much agree that the bonus for the top three players should be made up of points from other players rather than their own points being redistributed. Otherwise they can end up with lower scores than they actually scored which seems unfair

Wa aleykum salaam, but when there are only 3 people in the leaderboard, they would only get their own points?

Salam,

As far as I know, that is not necessarily the case. The points will be redistributed in a way that the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners will get 1/2, 1/3 and 1/6 of the total points respectively.

Assalamualaikum,

I just would like to, again, share my humbly idea that all participants be allowed to retain the points they’ve earned in both the Leaderboard Challenge and the Headup Challenge. In addition to this, extra bonus points can be awarded to the winners — specifically, the Headup Challenge winner, and the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners of the Leaderboard Challenge.

This approach would encourage greater participation and sustained engagement, as it offers value to all participants, not just the winners. Retaining points even for non-winners would serve as a meaningful incentive, especially compared to the current format where only the winners are rewarded and others leave empty-handed.

I believe this would create a more inclusive and motivating experience for everyone involved.

Allahu a’lam.

Jazak Allah khayr for responding Saliha. As suggested below the winners could get bonus points for their position so that more people are encouraged to participate. It is quite demoralising to have points you earned taken away
